You will be aware from my previous response to your questions regarding the funding for schools in Pembrokeshire (WQ80763 and WQ80764), that I have announced that the Welsh Government will provide an additional £29 million to schools to boost support for learners at crucial stages in their education from September. The equivalent of 600 extra teachers and 300 teaching assistants will be recruited throughout the next school year, targeting extra support at years 11, 12 and 13, as well as disadvantaged and vulnerable learners of all ages.

In addition to this specific investment Welsh Government has responded to the pandemic by allocating over £110m to provide an overarching single fund to support local authorities dealing with the impacts of Covid19.  Local authorities are able to claim for financial assistance for the additional costs incurred in dealing with the pandemic across service areas including schools services.

More specifically, I have sought to limit the impact of the crisis on children and young people and have also repurposed the following education spending:

  • £3m funding to support the delivery of the Stay Safe, Stay Learning programme, to help provide continuity of learning;
  • £1.719m for additional mental health support for children who may be experiencing increased stress of anxiety; and
  • Up to £3m as part of the wider Hwb EdTech programme to support digitally excluded learners.
