There will be only one Major Trauma Centre for Mid, South and West Wales which will be based at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) Cardiff.  This will deal with the most serious trauma.  A number of major trauma units, including one at Prince Charles Hospital, are being developed to deal with those who suffer moderate trauma.

These will form part of a major trauma network across Mid and South Wales which will also include trauma units in Princess of Wales and Morriston hospitals with interim trauma units being established in Glangwilli, Royal Gwent and Nevill Hall hospitals. UHW will also act as a trauma unit for its local population.

This development will not affect current acute and emergency services which will continue to deal with less severe trauma.

From next spring, patients who suffer major or moderate trauma will have access to strengthened services, which should improve their health and well-being outcomes.
