The Welsh Health Specialised Services Commission (WHSSC) has been responsible for commissioning mechanical thrombectomy for Welsh patients since April 2019.

Thrombectomy is available to patients from south and mid Wales from Southmead Hospital, Bristol. Patients from north Wales are able to access the service from the Walton Centre, Liverpool and patients from Powys are accessing the treatment from Royal Stoke University Hospital and University Hospital Birmingham.

There remain a few operational issues regarding the repatriation of patients from NHS England and WHSSC are working with the Welsh Ambulance Services Trust to resolve these. When the repatriation issues are resolved, WHSSC will issue a service specification for the service.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board have recently recruited a second Interventional Neuro-Radiologist and hope to commence a service from the University Hospital Wales in Cardiff next year.
