I met with the chair of HEFCW on the 18 June and received confirmation that HEFCW is engaging with the University and is monitoring its financial position in accordance with its regulatory and financial responsibilities. I received assurance that the University understand and are managing, any challenges that exist.
I am also aware that the university has announced plans to review its current structure and staffing levels. As universities are autonomous bodies, responsibility for administrative matters, including staffing, lies with the institution’s Governing Body. HE institutions need to take the necessary steps to secure the long-term success and sustainability of their institutions. However, I would expect the University to engage in meaningful discussions with staff, students and unions to explore and consider implications of any decisions.
