Between the financial years 2014-15 to 2016-17, 37 patients of all ages were treated at highly specialised centres in the UK providing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) treatment.

Between the financial years 2014-15 to 2016-17, which is the period for which figures are readily available, it is likely that 15 adult patients would have been referred to an ECMO unit had one been available in Wales. Child patients would have been continued to be treated in appropriate specialist centres and adult patients from North Wales would have likely followed established pathways.

Historically, there have not been enough patients in Wales requiring ECMO per year to make a centre in Wales practicable. The Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, which commissions ECMO, will however keep this situation under regular review.
